Short stories galore!

I have a personal challenge this year to get six short stories published. However, this means I have to submit lots! Due to this, my current WIP files are ridiculous – or at least, they are from my perspective. I’ve never really been a short story writer, but suddenly I feel as if I’ve got everything on the go at once.

I’ve got a couple of finished stories; two apocalyptic, one 300-word story (“weird” was Jon’s verdict), one solarpunk dragons, one Greensky short and one general horror that’s just finished being beta-read. Total finished is eight, but I’m not necessarily happy with all of those – but hey, finished stories! I also submitted one yesterday, so that’s a cross off my tally for submitting…acceptance is another matter, but I’ll just keep at that.

I’ve also got a couple of specific submissions that I’m currently writing. My favourite one at the moment is for Steampunk Universe, and as soon as I spotted it I knew I wanted to write something – disability and steampunk and alt universe and different culture? Win! It’s Greensky universe and gets to bring in new characters, so I’m happy. I’ve got another for New Legends that could be fun; the prompt is “Mercenary, Engineer, Captain” so I don’t yet know what I want to write, but it’s going to be awesome. I could do sailing ships, Taderah’s forest-trees, Jan’s early career or the mercencary life of the Dirrs…there’s a lot of aspects of the Greensky universe I could play with. And a third that I’m considering is Ghosts, Gears and Grimoires; steampunk featuring the supernatural! I haven’t really included the supernatural in Greensky at all, so I’m vaguely debating alt-universe’ing a fantasy world…hello brain-melt. I’ll figure something out, I suspect.

I’ve also got two other short stories that I’m working on. One’s a steampunk and mythology mix; I’m playing with concepts and I’ve got plots for about three stories in there, so I’m currently narrowing down which one I want to write. The other is an edge-of-the-known-world colonisation story, but I’ve added a Fae twist. I’m sort of using my Dresden character and some aspects of the world for it, so it almost feels like a continuation; the writing style seems to be coming from the Dresden side. I’m hoping that I can potentially continue the stories and the world if I like it, which would be amazing.

So I’m short-story writing at the moment, even if my novella writing is currently lacking. I’ll be submitting to various things over the next few months, mostly as and when I finish stuff, so…watch this space, I guess!
