“You all have you parts to play, and you will play them…I’ve seen it so many times.” She rested her chin on her hands, looking tired. “I broke so many rules and commands trying to save the city the first few times. I think that might be why I’m left here and forced to see it happen again and again. Although it wasn’t what made it into the circle in the first place.”

“So what did?”

“The actions of one of you, so long ago.” There was a tension along her jaw, and tightening of the muscles, as if she wanted to run. “You did something you weren’t meant to, and that affected everyone else. The effects were contained inside this cycle until either the original mistake was corrected and the normal timeline returns, or the mistake is played out and history can swing back into time.

“If I tell you what will happen and you break that cycle – if you can, which I really don’t know – then it puts everything into the hands of chance. You will replay the first battle over again, and the outcome will decide everything. I can tell you what I’ve seen happen, but my gifts will be no use to you from the point where you change something. At that point, you’re alone. Are you willing to risk everything on a venture that you don’t even know is possible?”
