Music: end-of-March update

So, what am I working on at the moment?

I finally got my hands on Celldweller’s Chapter 3: Dreams, and it is fantastic. I admit that I wasn’t too keen on the previous two; they were quite epic, quite guitar-dominated and effect-heavy, and lacking any songs that grabbed me. However, thanks to insomnia a few days ago I was able to sit down and listen to Dreams three times straight through, and I love it. I got hold of the instrumental version of Just Like You (including the Tom Player remix) and I’m currently learning that. I also have a soft spot for Good L_ck (Yo_’re F_cked) – Jay’s been grumbling that it’s not as good as The Best It’s Gonna Get and it could be longer, but I love the interwoven guitars. I’m also loving the drums in Faction 09…I think it’s the first time for a while that I’ve listened to an album and really enjoyed the experience, although I wonder how much of a part sleep deprivation has played in my opinion! I’ll have to listen again at a more sensible time. But anyway, Just Like You is beautiful, and has gone on my “to learn” list.

I’m also working on Bastille’s Oblivion as a solo piece. I’m still trying to extend my range (whoo confidence) as I can hit the high notes when I’m in the right mood, but I need to be able to hit them all the time. So that’s a nice goal and a nice stretch piece, and it’s a beautiful piece of music anyway.

I’ve still got Blue Stahli’s This Will Make You Love Again on the go – I’m trying to write a piano-only version, but that does involve getting to my piano for longer than five minutes. I’ve also got U2 Mysterious Ways and Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Shinedown Breaking Inside, Cranberries Linger and Halestorm Mz Hyde (love that song!) on my to-learn list.

I’ve also picked up a Disney book again, so strains of “When Somebody Loved Me” and the very boppy vocals of “Bear Necessities” have been floating through the house!

In practical news, I got hold of a mic recently. It’s just a cheap thing, but it’ll do for a start – and as Sam’s friend Dan Lynch told me, “you can always upgrade!” I also got a stack of advice from him in exchange for cookies*, which was brilliant; I’ve got an idea of recording equipment and programs to use. Check out Rathole Radio if you’ve got time?

I’m also starting to spread my musical wings and might have another project on the go (like I need more!) so I’ll update here if anything does come of it. And I’m hoping to record some stuff over Easter as well as get to the piano, so hopefully I can start actually acting on my various ideas and not just singing around the house. But we’ll see…

* Dan, if you’re reading this, the choice cards will be on their way to you on Monday!
